Capacity building

An important part of this is the focus on capacity building, and this is where short term accommodation for NDIS participants and their support workers can play an important role.

Capacity building is a critical component in helping NDIS participants to have the best life they can, but sometimes it requires them to step a little outside their comfort zone!

This can be difficult for the participant, so you need to make sure that any short term accommodation and travel is suitable and safe for them.

These considerations may include making sure that…

1) The accommodation is safe and suitable

All accommodation must have the right accessibility features – both from a physical and sensory standpoint, and must comply with all standard safety and security rules (eg fire safety, evacuation procedures and availability of staff to help the participant/s when needed), as well as complying with the NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Framework.

2) Support staff have relevant qualifications and experience

Team members delivering respite services and supported travel should be fully qualified in appropriate care needs (eg disability awareness, behaviour support strategies) and first aid. Any specific medication/s required (or other healthcare requirements) should be overseen by trained team members or a healthcare professional should be available to support the participant with their medication/healthcare.

3) Being aware of the participant’s support needs

Service providers should be fully aware of the participant’s support needs, routines and preferences and should ensure there is regular communication both with the participant and support workers/family members.

This is a big list, and the good news is that Cocoon Adventures, with expertise in helping NDIS participants step outside their comfort zone, is fully across all of these requirements.

Our focus is the same as yours – helping participants to build their own capacity in the safest way!
